For information about the next Beginners/Recreational session, email the club with your name and details of your sailing experience, if you have any. We will also email you a link to the WhatsApp community, where the majority of the club communications occur. Also, join the club mailing list and follow our Instagram page to make sure you’re updated with all the details.
Beginners/Recreational Days
These are a chance for anyone to come to the lake and have some fun on the water. Anyone of any ability is welcome, we provide RYA qualified instructors, so you know you’re in safe hands. And for those who are more experienced, just come along and have some fun!
The sessions are split into groups of beginner and recreational sailors so beginners can be coached by our instructors, while rec sailors can have a relaxing sail or get involved with fleet racing. We regularly take part in the races organised by Ripon Sailing Club, which is a great way to get better at boat handling in a fun way!!
Beginners and recreational sessions usually run on Wednesday afternoons, Saturdays or Sundays all year round, where the weather permits. Details are sent out to the club via the Beginner Sailing and Recreational Sailing WhatsApp groups, then you can confirm your attendance either in the chat or via email.
Here is a quick summary of the costs and what is included:
Beginner Session: Full day of sailing organised by RYA qualified instructors, with full tuition if required. - £10 per session
Recreational Session: Full day of sailing, either racing or cruising - £8 per session
Kit Provided:
Please note: you must have a Sailing and Windsurfing membership and have paid the Gold Tier AU fee to be able to participate in sessions. These can be purchased through the University of York Students' Union website.

- Buoyancy aids
- Use of boats and sails
